Erectile Dysfunction
Make an AppointmentHow Erectile Dysfunction Is Diagnosed
Diagnosing erectile dysfunction involves understanding both the physical and psychological factors that may be contributing to the condition. Because ED can sometimes be linked to underlying health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, or hormonal imbalance, it’s important to seek professional evaluation.
Assessment usually includes:
- Medical history and symptom review: Your doctor will discuss your overall health, medications, lifestyle habits, and emotional wellbeing.
- Physical examination: To assess circulation, nerve health, and hormonal indicators.
- Blood tests: To check for diabetes, cholesterol, testosterone, or other hormone levels.
- Stress and emotional screening: To identify possible psychological contributors like anxiety or depression.
Diagnosis is often collaborative between doctors and physiotherapists, ensuring that both the body and mind are considered before recommending a treatment plan.
Treatment Options for Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is highly treatable. At SJMC, our approach focuses on identifying the root cause and tailoring treatment to each patient’s individual needs. This often includes a combination of medical therapy and physiotherapy.
Medication
The first-line medical treatment for ED often includes Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which help increase blood flow to the penis by relaxing blood vessels. These medications assist in achieving and maintaining an erection when sexually aroused.
Physiotherapy for Erectile Function
Physiotherapy is an increasingly popular and effective approach for managing ED, especially when the cause is related to blood flow or weakened pelvic floor muscles.
Common physiotherapy treatments include:
1. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT / K-Laser Therapy)
This non-invasive therapy uses light energy at specific wavelengths to stimulate cell healing and improve blood circulation. It enhances nitric oxide release, helping blood vessels widen and improving oxygen supply to penile tissue. K-Laser therapy also stimulates mitochondrial activity, increasing energy (ATP) production and cell regeneration. Studies show that lasers at a wavelength of 905 nm can increase nitric oxide production by up to 700%, improving blood flow and supporting erectile function.2. Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (Kegel Exercises)
The pelvic floor muscles support erections, ejaculation, and bladder control. Just like other muscles, they can weaken over time, leading to erectile difficulties, premature ejaculation, or urinary incontinence. Kegel exercises strengthen these muscles, improving erection firmness, control, and confidence. With regular training, men can experience better sexual performance and improved pelvic health.
When combined, K-Laser Therapy and pelvic floor exercises form a powerful, non-invasive approach that addresses both circulation and muscle function, two of the most important factors in erectile health.
Psychological Support
Because emotional health can play a role in ED, counselling and stress management are sometimes recommended alongside physical therapy. Treating both the mind and body ensures a more complete recovery.
