Paediatrics

Children's Health

Delivering exceptional healthcare for children comes with very specific challenges. In the field of paediatrics we not only have to diagnose and treat often complex medical conditions, but offer support to deal with the added burden that healthcare treatment can take on vulnerable young people and their families.

Paediatric Specialists

At Subang Jaya Medical Centre we strive to work at the forefront of private healthcare for children, offering some of the best paediatricians and advanced clinical technologies for a wide range of indications. Our experienced paediatric specialists operate in centres of excellence for diagnosis and treatment, from paediatric oncology to paediatric cardiovascular indications, utilising innovative medical techniques to deliver the best possible clinical care for children.

Paediatrics (Child Specialist Clinic) at SJMC, Malaysia

Paediatric is the branch of medicine dealing with the development, care, and diseases of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. They diagnose and treat health conditions that affect this group of patients. In some countries, paediatric covers patients until the age of 18 years.

Children, by law, are those up to the age of 18 years. However, doctors specialising in the treatment of children usually see patients up to the age of 16 years. From that age on, patients are usually cared for by other doctors, except in selected cases.

Paediatric care starts at birth and lasts through a child's 18th birthday or perhaps longer. Paediatricians prevent, detect and manage physical, behavioural and developmental issues that affect children. At SJMC, our paediatricians are trained to diagnose and treat a broad range of childhood illnesses, from minor health problems to serious diseases.

Our paediatricians specialise in various aspects of children's healthcare, and some of them do perform surgery.

General Paediatrics Within a Private Hospital

General paediatricians are able to treat and manage a number of conditions, ranging from minor health problems like a cough or rash to more serious or long-term conditions, including congenital defects, hormonal problems, developmental issues, and mental or behavioural problems.

Regular health care visits are recommended at the following times: before your baby is born (highly recommended for first-time parents) and before your newborn leaves the hospital (commonly within 3 to 5 days after birth).

Signs of serious illness in a baby or toddler:

  • a high temperature, but cold feet and hands
  • a high temperature that does not lower with paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • your baby is quiet and listless, even when their temperature is down
  • a high temperature in a baby less than 8 weeks old

A paediatrician will talk to the parents about their child's problem and check the child for general danger signs. Most commonly, paediatricians look for the four main symptoms: cough or difficult breathing, diarrhoea, fever and ear problem. A child who has one or more of the main symptoms could have a serious illness.

Other than that, parents can look for these signs if they suspect that their children are not feeling well:

  1. Restless, listless or irritable when disturbed
  2. Cry readily and not easily comforted
  3. Lose interest in playing or oddly passive
  4. Unusually quiet and weak
  5. Lose their appetites
  6. The body feels hot upon touching
  7. Looks tired and flushed or pale
  8. Complaints of feeling cold

Anything from car sickness to indigestion can cause your child to be sick. Even prolonged crying or coughing can trigger this condition.

What Do Paediatrics Doctors Treat?

Common illnesses in infants, children, adolescents and young adults treated by our paediatricians include:

  1. Common Cold. One of the most common childhood illnesses
  2. Ear Infections. Another most common childhood illnesses
  3. Influenza
  4. Bronchitis
  5. RSV
  6. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
  7. Conjunctivitis
  8. Gastroenteritis

According to reports, pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death among children under 5 years of age worldwide, killing approximately 700,000 children a year. In many parts of the world, a child dies from pneumonia every minute though the disease is entirely preventable and can be easily managed with antibiotics.
